To address the concern of widespread infectious diseases occurring in 2010, I decided to find a method to educate children on hygiene for my senior thesis project. Using the medium of a children’s picture book, I used story telling, character development, and illustrations to convey the abstract idea of hygiene to the younger age groups.
I hope that Suzie the Pig will effectively teach young children the need for cleanliness and to promote good hygienic practices that they will then carry on through their life.
The premise
Suzie the Pig is a story about a messy girl named Suzie who has a very tidy pet pig. Suzie hates cleaning herself and her room but learns the impact of hygiene when her pig becomes sick. She is then taught that her habits, especially the messy ones, affect
not only herself but those around her as well. Suzie makes changes to her lifestyle and learns how to live healthily. The narrative is straightforward with a touch of irony, starring characters that compliment each other through their opposing and perceived personalities.

The process
I looked at popular children's books and at books that focused on health and hygiene to see what were their similarities and differences. Below is my storyboard
